I watched The Devil’s River episode last night. Who let me out of the house in that shirt I am wearing. I looked more like a rodeo clown than a serious fly fisherman. The show was shot 6 years ago. The toughest shoot that we have ever done. The first day was great weather, but due to the difficulty of getting a film crew into the location we were only able to fish a couple of hours. That night the temperature dropped into the 30′s and it really shut the fish down. Had we not been filming I would just Read more...

We filmed this weeks episode in Venice, Louisiana in May. Katrina then hit in August or September that same year. Watch and you will hear Burwick Duvall totally predict Katrina and the aftermath. Next weeks episode we visit the same area after Katrina. It did not even look like the same place. The fishing was actually better after the storm. We went back last year to film after the oil-spill. Fishing was great and we saw no signs of oil damage. The marsh seems to be as resilient as the people.

This weeks episode really makes the effects of the current drought hit home for me. Every pond and stock tank on The Miller Ranch is now completely dry. The cover is completely depleted and the landowner says that he is seeing no quail. The entire state is being effected. We seem to be in a fairly consistent rain pattern for the last couple of months.I just hope it continues. I am curious to see if the quail numbers will ever recover to pre-drought conditions.

Big news for the hunting club here in Nebraska. We will be moving to a new location for next season. A big improvement. Much closer to our hunting grounds and twice as nice. The new place is on a beautiful creek bottom surrounded by old cottonwood trees. Deer and turkeys actually come to feed in the front yard. Moving will not be fun although it will definitely be worth it for next season. I leave tomorrow for The Shot Show in Las Vegas for 4 days. Looking forward to meeting new sponsors and all the guys and girls from Pursuit Read more...

Winding up one of the best pheasant and quail seasons I have ever experienced in Nebraska. I hosted a group of 6 hunters over the weekend. Every hunter limited on Saturday and Sunday. Lots of birds taken in front of pointed dogs. These birds have been hunted for 2 1/2 months and the dogs are still able to point a few. Pointing late season wild pheasants is considered impossible by some hunters. It just takes experienced dogs. Rio is 7 years old now and is definitely in his prime. The birds don’t have a chance. We saw over 500 pheasants Read more...
